Mohammad Mehdi Karami is a karate champion and has several championship medals. He is one of the five defendants who have been sentenced to death over the killing of a member of the paramilitary Basij force during protests in Karaj. The incident happened on November 3rd in Karaj, when mourners were paying tribute to a slain protester, Hadis Najafi, at a cemetery to mark 40 days after she was killed in the city.
